The Lakers' Season Opener: A Mix of Excitement and Uncertainty
Welcome back, basketball enthusiasts, to another edition of the Lakers newsletter. I’m Thuc Nhi Nguyen, your Lakers beat writer for The Los Angeles Times, and I’m thrilled to have you here (and grateful for all the fantastic food recommendations you’ve shared!). As we stand halfway through the preseason, the anticipation for the return of real basketball is palpable. But here’s where it gets intriguing: with LeBron James sidelined and Luka Doncic making his preseason debut, the Lakers are at a crossroads just one week before opening night.
Luka’s Return: A Glimpse of What’s to Come
We’re finally one step closer to seeing the Lakers’ true potential as Luka Doncic is set to make his preseason debut against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday. Doncic, expected to play in two of the final three preseason games, will likely wrap up his preseason run on Friday at Crypto.com Arena against the Sacramento Kings, skipping the Las Vegas game against his former team, the Dallas Mavericks. His return promises to shed some light on the Lakers’ dynamics, but with just a week until the season opener, there’s still much to unravel.
The LeBron James Dilemma: A First in His Illustrious Career
And this is the part most people miss: LeBron James, the Lakers’ cornerstone, will miss the season opener due to sciatica in his right side. This marks the first time in his 23-year NBA career that he won’t be on the court for the opening game. The team announced a three-to-four-week recovery timeline, ruling him out for the October 21 clash against the Golden State Warriors. While Coach JJ Redick has downplayed preseason lineup decisions, he admits James’ absence “complicates things a little bit.” Redick emphasizes the need for balance—shooting, facilitating, defense, and managing player temperaments—all within a week’s time. “It will reveal itself to us,” he said, leaving fans and analysts alike on the edge of their seats.
Who Steps Up in LeBron’s Absence?
The Lakers’ next move is critical. Marcus Smart, a strong contender for the starting lineup even before James’ injury, will make his preseason debut on Tuesday after recovering from Achilles tendinopathy. Smart’s return to practice last week showcased his signature hustle and defensive prowess, earning praise from Redick. Meanwhile, Jarred Vanderbilt, fully recovered from a foot injury, has been a defensive standout in training camp, grabbing 13 rebounds, four steals, and a block in three games. However, his three-point shooting (1-for-10) remains a question mark.
Offensive Load and Emerging Stars
With James out, the offensive burden may shift to Rui Hachimura or free agent addition Jake LaRavia. Second-year guard Dalton Knecht, who struggled in the summer league due to overtraining, has emerged as a scoring threat off the bench. Redick praised Knecht as the team’s best offensive player in training camp, rewarding him with a starting spot against the Warriors, where he scored 16 points. However, Knecht’s playing time hinges on his defensive improvement. “His ceiling depends on his growth as a defender,” Redick noted.
Austin Reaves has shouldered the heaviest workload during the preseason, scoring 41 points in 44 minutes across two games. Yet, he acknowledges that replacing James requires a collective effort. “Nobody can be LeBron,” Reaves said. “It’s a next-man-up mentality, and we’ll do it as a group.”
Controversial Question: Can the Lakers Thrive Without LeBron?
Here’s a thought-provoking question for you: With LeBron James out for the season opener, do you think the Lakers can still compete at a high level, or is his absence too significant to overcome? Let’s debate this in the comments!
Off the Court: Dim Sum Delights
While the Lakers enjoyed a week at home, I ventured to Brooklyn for a friend’s wedding, where I indulged in dim sum at Manhattan’s Golden Unicorn. From baked BBQ pork buns to shrimp shumai, it was a feast to remember. My standout dish? Mango pudding, loaded with fresh mango chunks—the perfect sweet treat before a food coma.
