Microsoft UK's Black History Month 2025: Celebrating Power and Pride (2025)

Black History Month 2025: 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride'

Microsoft UK employees celebrated Black History Month with a series of events in October 2025, centered around the theme 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride'. The month-long initiative aimed to educate, inspire, and celebrate the achievements of Black individuals and communities.

The theme informed various sessions, including a panel discussion on neurodiversity, a marketplace fair showcasing Black-owned businesses, a talk by BBC broadcaster Primrose Granville about the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott, and a charity tennis tournament for DKMS, a blood cancer charity.

Embrace, Microsoft's employee community dedicated to celebrating and advancing ethnicity, hosted a vibrant closing celebration. The event brought employees together in person and online, with a focus on fostering inclusion and excellence.

Jeramie Sutton, Embrace Co-chair, emphasized the importance of creating environments where employees can come together, connect, and stand firm in power and pride. Dedun Oyenuga and Anjola Adebowale, BHM organizers, shared their mission to empower and enable Black underrepresented talent in the digital revolution.

The celebration featured moments of reflection, inspiration, and connection, highlighting the achievements and stories that shaped the month's activities. Sutton and Embrace Co-Chair Amber Joyce emphasized the ongoing commitment to creating inclusive environments and standing firm in power and pride.

Two influential Black leaders, Pam Maynard and Jacky Wright, shared their experiences as Black female leaders in male-dominated sectors. Maynard, Chief AI Transformation Officer, and Wright, former Microsoft Chief Digital Officer, discussed the theme of 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride'.

Maynard reflected on her journey, realizing that her difference became her power. Wright emphasized the theme's connection to mental willpower and the power of community and differences. Both leaders shared their experiences as the only Black women in the room and offered advice on coping with such situations.

Maynard encouraged the audience to believe in their abilities and use their expertise as a strength. Wright introduced the concept of an 'elevator pitch' to navigate challenging situations. They both highlighted the importance of allyship and community support, emphasizing the power of collective action and maintaining cultural pride.

As the celebrations concluded, the message was clear: standing firm in power and pride is an ongoing commitment. Black History Month 2025 at Microsoft UK showcased the power of community, the significance of representation, and the impact of collective action, inspiring employees to continue their journey towards a more inclusive and empowered future.
