NZ Weather Alert: 'Stuck' Fronts Bring Heavy Rain & Strong Winds - Full Warnings & Watches (2025)

A persistent weather phenomenon has triggered heavy rain alerts across New Zealand, with some regions bracing for a soggy and potentially windy two-day stretch. The culprit? Two stubborn weather fronts that have collided and become stationary over the South Island.

MetService meteorologist Silvia Martino explains that the unique interaction between a northern and southern front has created a 'stuck' situation over Canterbury and Westland. "The front is creeping up the West Coast at a snail's pace, leaving us with persistent rain over Westland for the foreseeable future," Martino elaborates.

The northern front, currently active over the upper North Island, is bringing rain to the Bay of Plenty and is expected to blanket Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Taranaki, and the rest of the Bay of Plenty. "Almost all of the upper North Island is under watch or warning for heavy rain, with only the northernmost tip of Northland escaping the brunt of it," Martino clarifies.

Locations north of Palmerston North are in for a particularly unpleasant night, with temperatures remaining uncomfortably high at 17C and above. "It will be a muggy, rainy night," Martino adds.

But here's where it gets controversial: while some regions are under heavy rain warnings, others are merely on watch. The distinction is important, as it indicates a potential for heavy rain but not a certainty. And this is the part most people miss: the difference between a watch and a warning.

So, what does this mean for New Zealanders? Well, for those in the affected regions, it's time to batten down the hatches and prepare for some wet and possibly windy conditions. For the rest of us, it's a reminder of the ever-changing nature of our weather and the importance of staying informed.
