Zohran Mamdani: Sustaining Momentum & Avoiding Obama's Mistakes | Harvard Kennedy School (2025)

The story of Zohran Mamdani, the incoming New York City mayor, and his journey to sustain a grassroots movement is an inspiring one. But here's where it gets controversial...

Can a political campaign maintain its momentum and avoid the pitfalls of past successes?

Marshall L. Ganz, a Harvard Kennedy School lecturer and veteran political organizer, stepped in to guide Mamdani's team. Ganz, with his experience from Barack Obama's 2008 campaign, offered a unique perspective. He warned Mamdani's team about the 'Obama Trap' - the risk of sidelining the very base that propelled them to victory.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, had already made waves by mobilizing over 100,000 volunteers, breathing new life into the Democratic Party. But the real test was yet to come.

"The discussion was all about the future," Ganz explained. "How do we ensure that the incredible organization we've built doesn't just fizzle out?"

One strategy Mamdani's team adopted was the creation of a new advocacy nonprofit, 'Our Time for an Affordable NYC.' This organization, Ganz said, is "parallel but independent" from Mamdani, sharing his values and vision.

Ganz's involvement, first reported by The New York Times, was initiated by Tascha Van Auken, another Obama alum and field organizer. Ganz's role as a consultant was to provide training and support to Mamdani's staffers, focusing on leadership development - an area he believes has been overlooked since the Obama campaign.

"Mamdani's campaign already had it right," Ganz said. "Sometimes, it's about recognizing excellence and offering support, rather than imposing your own ideas."

And this is the part most people miss...

Mamdani sought advice from a diverse range of experts, including Lilliam Barrios-Paoli and Matt Bruenig, to prepare for his new role. Despite Obama's lack of endorsement, the former president called Mamdani twice, offering insights into the challenges of governance.

Mamdani's transition team is a unique blend of progressive ideals and political experience, including Lina Khan, former Federal Trade Commission chair.

Ganz believes Mamdani's success could pave the way for a new era for Democrats. "It's not just about savvy marketing," he said. "It's about the humanity of the campaign."

"This is a movement in the making," Ganz added.

At Mamdani's election night party, the focus was on the volunteers - a true reflection of the campaign's values.

"It's a hopeful, energetic, and aspirational movement," Ganz quipped.

Now, Mamdani faces the challenge of governing a complex city with a massive budget and workforce. Ganz is ready to offer his support, believing that his role in this journey is significant.

So, what do you think? Can Mamdani avoid the 'Obama Trap' and sustain his grassroots movement? Share your thoughts in the comments!
